Wayne K. Hoy, Fawcett Professor of Educational Administration
Wayne K. Hoy received his B. S. from Lock Haven State College in 1959 and his D. Ed. from The Pennsylvania State University in 1965. After teaching at Oklahoma State University for several years, he moved to Rutgers University in 1968, where he was a distinguished professor, department chair, and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. In 1994, he moved to Ohio State University as the Novice G. Fawcett Chair in Educational Administration.
Professor Hoy has received a number of honors, including the both the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching and the Alumni Award for Professional Research from Rutgers University; the Excellence in Education Award and the Alumni Fellow Award from The Pennsylvania State University; the Meritorious Research Award from the Eastern Educational Research Association; and an Outstanding Research Award from the School of Policy and Leadership at The Ohio State University. He is past secretary-treasurer of the National Conference of Professors of Educational Administration (NCPEA) and is past president of the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA). In November (2003) he was honored by the University Council for Educational Administration with The Campbell Lifetime Achievement, "celebrating an extraordinary and generous career in educational administration."
Professor Hoy has authored and edited more than a dozen books. He is co-author with D. J. Willower and T. L. Eidell of The School and Pupil Control Ideology (1967); with Patrick Forsyth, Effective Supervision: Theory into Practice (1986); with C. J. Tarter and R. Kottkamp, Open Schools-Healthy Schools (1991); with C. J. Tarter, Administrators Solving the Problems of Practice, 2nd edition (2003); with C. J. Tarter, The Road to Open and Health Schools (1997); with D. Sabo, Quality Middle Schools (1998).In addition, his text with Cecil Miskel, Educational Administration: Theory, Research, and Practice is in its 7th edition and is one of the most widely read texts in educational administration in the world. He is also on the editorial boards of the Journal of Educational Administration, and Leadership and Policy in Schools, and he has published his research widely in both education and administration journals. He is married to Anita Woolfolk Hoy, an educational psychology professor at The Ohio State University. Together they conduct research on teacher and school efficacy; they have just completed a new book, Instructional Leadership: A Learning-centered Guide for Principals. They have three children, Wayne (President of Advanced Software Products) in San Francisco, Kelly, a special education teacher in San Francisco, and Liz, a home maker in Columbus, OH.
